IEM Charter Schools including Sky Mountain Charter, Ocean Grove Charter and South Sutter Charter School continue to monitor the COVID-19 outbreak. Student safety is paramount and we are taking precautions and guidelines to limit the exposure of this Coronavirus.
As personalized learning public charter schools, our schools are uniquely prepared to adapt to a rapid outbreak of this virus within our communities. We are one of the few schools in California to remain open and ensuring our students are continuing with their core academic learning.
As this outbreak has unfolded, we have taken appropriate actions to ensure the safety of our students, teachers, and families. Per Governor Newsom’s order on March 19th, all in-person activities have been canceled indefinitely.

The US Department of Education posted an announcement regarding the cancellation of the standardized testing requirements for this year. The California Department of Education followed up with a message outlining what this means for our state. At this time, CAASPP and Summative ELPAC assessments are canceled for this school year.
The Initial ELPAC assessment, given to certain students new to the CA Public School system, has been granted a 45 day extension on the deadline requirement, allowing schools to complete it within 75 days upon return to session instead of 30. This would affect only a handful of students at our schools. Physical Fitness Testing for students in grades 5, 7, and 9 has also been postponed until schools are back in session. While our schools have all remained in session, the statewide Shelter in Place order prevents us from administering either the Initial ELPAC or the PFTs at this time. It is not likely that will change before the end of the school year, but as always, we will keep everyone informed of additional state assessment related updates as soon as we are made aware of them.
Frequently Asked Questions
In response to the local and statewide efforts to contain the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, we are ceasing in-person activities and transitioning to online services including learning record meetings and special education services. Summarized below are some FAQs. All answers are subject to change as this outbreak evolves.
Will our school be closed?
No, our schools will remain open. Compared to classroom-based schools, we are well-equipped to cope with these modifications to our learning program. We will need to make some changes in our in-person activities. We appreciate your understanding regarding this public health emergency.
What are Virtual Learning Record Meetings (VLRM), and how do they work?
VLRMs accomplish all of the objectives of an in-person LR meeting but are done through the Zoom software on your computer or phone. Please review our Parent Zoom/VLRM Training so that you are prepared to effectively engage in these meetings. Once you are done with the training you must fill out our Parent Zoom/VLRM Protocol Agreement.
Can my child still attend their in-person vendor classes?
No, all in-person activities are canceled indefinitely. Online service vendor classes and lessons may continue through the end of the school year (May 22). We cannot pay for school activities after the school year ends.
Is the CAASPP state assessments canceled for next month?
The US Department of Education preliminarily granted the state waiver request related to CAASPP testing. There will be no CAASPP testing requirement for this school year. Any English Language Learners who have not yet completed the Summative ELPAC will also not be required to complete that state assessment. More information on this can be found above in the State Testing section.
Will our school library remain open?
Yes, our school libraries will remain open as long as our staff members are healthy; however, the library will not accept any visitors. If you would like to receive curriculum from our library, please contact your ES for more information. We can ship curriculum directly to the parent’s home from our library.
When will things get back to normal for our school?
This is a fluid situation and the future is unknown but it is likely these precautions will last through the current school year. Should an update be necessary we will provide one.
Will high school graduation/8th grade promotion happen?
We are looking for alternative solutions to celebrate our graduates.
Will Science and Art in the Park (SAP) classes continue?
All in-person activities are canceled indefinitely. SAP will not resume.
